Pour remercier nos deux alliés principaux pour leur engagement sans faille, il y a 80 ans, dans l’opération Overlord qui fût le point de départ de la libération de notre pays, notre association et le “Comité de la Voie de La Liberté” (Voie Patton créée en 1946) ont décidé, dès juillet 2023, de mettre en place en commun cette opération mémorielle unique baptisée « Flamme de la Liberté, Operation Mirror 2024.
Cette manifestation avait pour objectif d’apporter l’immense reconnaissance et gratitude des citoyens de France aux deux alliés principaux artisans du débarquement de 1944 : le Royaume-Uni et les Etats Unis. Pour cela le projet s’est construit autour d’un symbole fort représentant notre nation : la Flamme de la Nation. Celle-ci a été prélevée le 8 mai 2024 sous l’arc de Triomphe et a été escortée par 34 jeunes pendant 7 jours entre Paris et Portsmouth. Le dispositif composé de plusieurs véhicules, notamment de véhicules militaires de 1944 a parcouru plus de 900 km à rebours sur la Voie de la Liberté entre Auneau-Bleury- Saint-Symphorien (Eure-et-Loir) et Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. La Flamme de la Nation a été protégée dans 3 lanternes et plusieurs lanternes ont été déposées dans différentes villes étapes dont Sainte-Mère-Eglise et Carentan-les-Marais. Elle a été également déposée au cimetière militaire US de Colleville-sur-Mer où elle est restée allumée jusqu’au 6 juin 2024.
Le 14 mai 2024, pour la première fois depuis 1923 elle a été embarquée à Bord de M/V Galicia Ferry depuis Cherbourg à destination du Royaume-Uni et du port de Portsmouth où une cérémonie officielle a eu lieu en présence de la Royal Navy.
Le 16 mai 2024 la Flamme a embarqué pour les Etats-Unis à bord de Queen Mary 2. Elle fût escortée et veillée, nuits et jours, à tour de rôle, par 12 jeunes du dispositif initial. Elle a été déposée lors d’une cérémonie émouvante sur la tombe des soldats inconnus américains située à Arlington National Cemetery près de Washington DC le 24 mai 2024. La Flamme de notre Nation y est restée allumée jusqu’au 6 juin 2024.

La manifestation n’est pas totalement terminée car nous préparons un reportage vidéo préparé par un professionnel qui sera diffusé fin 2024 et durant l’année 2025 dans les différentes villes étapes et au-delà lors de projections- débats en présence de quelques jeunes qui ont escorté la Flamme.

In order to thank our two main allies for their unfailing commitment 80 years ago in Operation Overlord, which was the starting point for the liberation of our country, our association and the "Comité de la Voie de La Liberté" (Voie Patton created in 1946) decided, in July 2023, to jointly set up this unique memorial operation.
Called "Flamme de la Liberté, Operation Mirror 2024", the aim of the event was to express the immense gratitude of the citizens of France to the two main allies behind the 1944 landings: the United Kingdom and the United States. To achieve this, the project was built around a powerful symbol representing our nation: the Flame of the Nation. The flame was collected on 8 May 2024 from under the Arc de Triomphe and escorted by 34 young people for 7 days between Paris and Portsmouth. The convoy, made up of several vehicles, including military vehicles from 1944, travelled more than 900 km backwards along the Voie de la Liberté between Auneau-Bleury-Saint-Symphorien (Eure-et-Loir) and Cherbourg-en-Cotentin. The Flame of the Nation was protected in 3 lanterns and several lanterns were placed in various stopover towns, including Sainte-Mère-Eglise and Carentan-les-Marais. It was also laid to rest at the Colleville-sur-Mer US military cemetery, where it remained lit until 6 June 2024.

On 16 May 2024, the Flame embarked for the United States aboard Queen Mary 2. It was escorted and watched over, night and day, in turn, by 12 young people from the initial scheme. On 24 May 2024, it was laid to rest at a moving ceremony on the grave of unknown American soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery near Washington DC. Our Nation's Flame remained lit there until 6 June 2024.

The event is not completely over, as we are preparing a video report to be produced by a professional, which will be broadcast at the end of 2024 and during 2025 in the various stopover towns and beyond during screenings and debates in the presence of some of the young people who escorted the Flame.
