Leur mauvaise conduite et leur ingratitude auraient provoqué le courroux divin. Guéno, le Dieu suprême, décida de les châtier et suscita à cet effet une terrible et maléfique créature, Njeddo Dewal, la grande sorcière. Bâgoumâwel, petit garçon prédestiné, affronte Njeddo Dewal à cinq reprises. Chaque duel est rocambolesque, les deux combattants utilisant ruse, magie et prière. Il n'y aura qu'un vainqueur.
