The Human Rights Legal Project (HRLP) is a small legal aid organisation, challenging big power in Greece

  • We are politically and financially independent of any government, political ideology, economic interest or religion. This fiscal independence allows us to continue our work with integrity and act in full accordance with our principles and values.
  • HRLP is located in the town of Vathy, on the Greek island of Samos. The organisation was initially founded in 2020 as a joint initiative of humanitarian workers, who were appalled at the suffering that they were witnessing, and took action to challenge the environment of impunity.
  • Three years later, HRLP is a registered NGO, staffed by three Greek lawyers, a Case Worker, and a Legal Coordinator, and plugged into a vast network of legal professionals and advocates across the EU.
  • We are lucky enough to work with a select number of committed partners, who have been unwavering in their support since the beginning. However, one of our largest funders, who initially seeded our project, and remained with us ever since, is ceasing operations in July 2023. Your donation will help us to fill this deficit in core funds, but also to meet our increasing workload, and ensure continuity of high-quality service.

By donating to HRLP, you defend the fundamental rights of displaced people at the border of the European Union

  • The organisation is entirely unique in the Greek context, we challenge the systemic and individual human rights abuses that fall outside of the asylum process, including the criminalisation of asylum seekers, pushbacks, arbitrary detention, and denial of access to healthcare.
  • The situation for displaced people on the Aegean islands has grown increasingly hostile. People face numerous barriers in their search for safety, and humanitarians are criminalised for assisting.
  • HRLP uses the law to hold States and authorities accountable to their obligations under International Humanitarian Law, and advocates for a fair, safe and dignified migration and asylum system, in Greece, and at the level of the EU.
