Amid the devastating human tragedy unfolding in Europe, L'AiR Arts and Cité Falguière Associations are launching solidarity initiative in support of those affected by political conflicts.

A safe haven to a multicultural artists' community during the inter-war period of the twentieth century, Atelier 11 Cité Falguière remains committed to promoting world peace and international solidarity through cross-cultural artistic dialogue and exchange. Founded on the principles of intercultural understanding, mutual support and acceptance, Atelier 11 stands in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and all those around the world, including in Russia and Belarus, whose rights and freedoms are threatened by acts of tyranny and violence. We will support all those affected in three ways:
  • Solidarity events open to all
  • Art programs for children
  • Arts residences for artists and cultural workers
As the world's longest-running international artists' residency, Atelier 11 has long played a critical role in facilitating global solidarity by bridging intercultural understanding and peace-keeping. Throughout its 150-year history, Cité Falguière served as a living and working place to more than a hundred international artists, including the renowned Amedeo Modigliani, Paul Gauguin, Constantin Brancusi, Chaïm Soutine, and Tsuguharu Foujita. Known as the École de Paris, the liberal exchange between artists of different nationalities, languages, cultures and religions resulted in a remarkable diversity of styles and marked the birth of Modernism, one of the most prolific periods in art history.

The idea of our solidarity initiative is to revisit and develop the open and creative energy of Montparnasse as well as the spirit of unity that allowed the arts community to thrive in the heart of Europe during the politically-strained interwar period. Similar to a century ago, the world is being greatly impacted by divisive political conflicts that have cost many lives and disrupted the wellbeing of citizens across the world. Today, more than ever, the world needs assistance in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, and community engagement.

All initiatives will be co-hosted together with Paris-based artists and cultural professionals, who will build on the mission of unity, openness and liberty in their cross-cultural artistic programming. To borrow French scholar Michel Espagne's concept of "cultural transfers,” artists are often catalysts for global mobility – 'vectors' in the cross-cultural exchanges that fuel the evolution of culture, politics, and society. “To become attentive to cultural changes implies revising, at least virtually, the structures of collective memory... seeking imported elements, which are often marginalized.” Artists and cultural professionals wishing to contribute to this solidarity initiative are invited to submit their proposals to info@lairarts.com.

Solidarity events for all

A vital part of the contemporary global community, artists' residencies not only provide artists and cultural professionals with time and space to enable the creative process, they also engage diverse communities from across the world, locally and globally. Our solidarity events offer an opportunity for everyone to build connections and share experiences and ideas with others as people. We are also calling on everyone to continue to operate with respect, and refrain from stigmatizing or excluding individuals based on their country of origin, nationality, race, religion, language, gender identity or other characteristics. Leading without prejudice and responding with empathy will allow us to remain united rather than cause further divisions.

Join us for our first public event: Solidarity Borsch You can join in person on Friday March 11 at 6 p.m. at Atelier 11 Cité Falguière or from anywhere in the world anytime by trying our special borsch recipe! All proceeds will go in support of solidarity events, children programs and art residencies for those from conflict-affected areas seeking refuge in Paris, France.

Art Programs for Children

Arts plays a vital part in helping children in coping with stress, while strengthening their mental health and improving overall well-being. In collaboration with both local and international artists, Atelier 11 will offer art programs for children and youth from conflict-affected areas. The events will include studio visits, art discussions, workshops and other opportunities to help children adapt to their new environment.

Our programs will aim to immerse children in an inclusive multicultural environment, addressing the issues of bullying, racism and exclusion, in order to improve their overall mental and emotional well-being. In dialogue with their own heritage and the history of Cité Falguière as a haven for young artists from Eastern Europe, these opportunities defy language and nationality to engage children in multicultural artistic exchange.

Arts Residences for Artists and Cultural Workers

Political conflicts, restrictions and regulations have already resulted in the displacement, punishment and silencing of artists and cultural workers as well as closures of arts and culture institutions around the world. As a refuge for diverse artistic community during the WWI and WW2, Atelier 11 will offer a temporary shelter for any affected contemporary artist or cultural professional.

If you or someone you know might benefit from our assistance in the form of an arts residency, please write to us at info@lairarts.com. Include a brief explanation of your situation and needs, a link to your artistic portfolio, and your contact information. Due to a high volume of applications and limited capacity, we cannot guarantee a response to everyone.

Identities, values and visions of the future can be shared and shaped by the arts, which is a vital platform for intercultural dialogue. The goal of this initiative is not only to highlight the important role that the international artistic community has played in Paris during the 20th Century interwar period, but also to support international dialogue towards an open and free world of today. Artistic exchanges are an ideal platform to facilitate this urgent and complex goal and contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the impact of arts and culture on society.
