“Cycling around the Mediterranean” est une initiative sportive portant une dimension sociale et humanitaire. Il s’agit de parcourir à vélo les côtes méditerranéennes pour soutenir des causes humanitaires qui nous tiennent à coeur et contribuer à des projets au coeur des enjeux du développement durable.
Pour notre premier défi, nous avons choisi de parcourir environ 5000 Km reliant Paris à Tunis en traversant la France, l’Espagne, le Maroc, l'Algérie et la Tunisie dans un but de soutenir la promotion de l'Oncologie Pédiatrique en Tunisie.
Origine du projet
“Je m'appelle Walid MBARKI, je suis étudiant en master Mécanique, parcours Innovations en Conception et Matériaux à l’Université d’Orléans et titulaire du Statut National Étudiant-Entrepreneur.
Je suis effectivement à l’origine de ce projet, cependant il m’est possible de le réaliser aujourd’hui grâce au support et l'intérêt porté par de nombreux acteurs de la société civile que ce soit en France ou dans les différents pays traversés.
De nature sportif, voyageur et aventurier, je choisis de transformer ce que je fais, autour de ce que le monde a besoin et je décide d'approcher mes limites physiques pour soutenir des causes humanitaires qui me tiennent à coeur. Je conçois la réalisation de ce périple comme une satisfaction personnelle mais également un exploit social et humanitaire.”
Objectif
L’initiative Cycling around the Mediterranean a pour objectifs :
Promouvoir l’utilisation du vélo comme moyen de transport responsable et durable.
Contribuer à des projets au cœur des enjeux du développement durable.
Rencontrer de nouvelles personnes et découvrir d’autres cultures.
Partager les histoires des différentes cultures méditerranéennes tout en mettant l'accent sur ce qui est commun.
Consolider les liens de coopération déjà établis entre les pays méditerranéens et imaginer l’établissement de nouveaux partenariats
A quoi servira l'argent collecté ?
Pour ce premier défi je choisi de traverser à vélo 5 pays pendant 6 à 8 semaines (∼5500 Km) pour soutenir la promotion de l’Oncologie pédiatrique et collecter des fonds pour l’Association Tunisienne d’Oncologie Pédiatrique.
L’ATOP (Association Tunisienne d’Oncologie Pédiatrique) est une organisation tunisienne à but non lucratif dont le principal objectif est de promouvoir l’oncologie pédiatrique en Tunisie, par plusieurs volets :
- Organisation de manifestations scientifiques portant sur les cancers pédiatriques
- Concertation entre différentes spécialités pour la prise en charge globale des enfants atteints de cancers (oncologie pédiatrique, chirurgie pédiatrique, radiothérapie, radiologie pédiatrique, anatomopathologie, ophtalmologie, orthopédie, neurochirurgie, génétique…)
- Participation à la formation continue des médecins de 1ère ligne dans les différentes régions du pays afin d’initier ces médecins au diagnostic précoce des cancers pédiatriques.
- Soutien aux familles d’enfants atteints de cancers.
L'objectif est de collecter 5500€ (soit 1€ / Km traversé) d’ici la fin du voyage. Les bénéfices de collecte de fonds seront directement reversés à l’Association Tunisienne d’Oncologie Pédiatrique

Presentation of the project:
“Cycling around the Mediterranean” is a sports initiative with social and humanitarian dimensions. This project involves cycling the Mediterranean coasts to support humanitarian causes that we hold close to heart, while making our contribution to sustainable development. For our first challenge, we have decided to cover the 5000km connecting Paris to Tunis, by crossing France, Spain, Morocco, Algeria, and finally, Tunisia, in order to support the work of Pediatric Oncology in Tunisia.
Origins of the project:
My name is Walid MBARKI, I am a master's student in Mechanics, Innovations in Design and Materials at the University of Orleans and a holder of the National Student-Entrepreneur Status.
I am at the root of this project, however it is only possible for me to realize it today thanks to the support and the interest carried by many actors of civil society in France or in the various countries of this journey.
A lover of sports, travel and adventure by nature, I choose to transform what I do, based on what the world needs. For this reason, I decided to push my physical limits to support humanitarian causes that are
close to my heart. I see the realization of this journey as a personal satisfaction but also a social and humanitarian feat.
Goals:
The Cycling around the Mediterranean initiative aims to:
- Promote the use of bicycles as a responsible and sustainable form of transportation.
- Contribute to projects at the heart of sustainable development issues.
- Meet new people and discover other cultures.
- Share stories of different Mediterranean cultures while emphasizing what is common.
- Consolidate the ties of cooperation already established between the Mediterranean countries and imagine the establishment of new partnerships.
Who will use collected funds?
For this first challenge, I chose to travel, by bike, across 5 countries during 6-8 weeks (roughly 5500km) to support the promotion of pediatric oncology, and to fundraise for the Tunisian Association of Pediatric Oncology.
ATOP (Tunisian Association of Pediatric Oncology) is a Tunisian non-profit organization with its primary objective being to promote pediatric oncology, through several components:
- Organizing scientific events on pediatric cancers.
- Consultation between the different specialties of comprehensive care for children with cancer (pediatric oncology, pediatric surgery, radiotherapy, pediatric radiology, anatomopathology, ophthalmology, orthopedics, neurosurgery, genetics, etc).
- Participation in the continuing education of primary care physicians in the various regions of the county in order to best prepare physicians for the early diagnosis of pediatric cancers.
- Supporting the families of the children with cancer.
The objective is to collect 5500€ (1€ / km travelled) by the end of the journey. All profits raised by donations will be given directly to the Tunisian Association of Pediatric Oncology.

This project is the personal initiative of a young Tunisian student and entrepreneur, who was encouraged by the support and interest shown by many actors of civil society, in France and across Spain, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia.
