Help us honour those killed on the French-British border.
by Le réveil voyageur
At the time of writing, 68 people have died at the French-British border since January 1st, 2024, adding to the 29 who died in 2023.
Since 1999, as far as we know, at least 504 people have died trying to reach the United Kingdom or at its border, and a very large number are still missing, victims of the border and the policies of non-acceptance that are pursued there.
They have died in the indifference of political leaders who deny them access to their freedom of movement; hit by lorries, asphyxiated in containers, electrocuted on railway lines and drowned at sea.
It was against this backdrop that the death group was formed in 2017, made up of people in solidarity with those stranded at the border.
Its aim is to honor the memory of those who died at the Franco-British border and to support their loved ones through various actions:
- Helping to identify, trace and liaise with relatives and families, in the shanty towns of northern France and abroad.
- Documenting and investigating deaths at the border, participating in the work of remembrance and raising the profile of people killed at the border.
- Assist families with administrative and funeral procedures, according to their choices and religious convictions.
So that we don't forget the dead of the border, make it a place of remembrance, and continue to fight to abolish these deadly policies.
Description of expenditure items
Families often cannot afford to repatriate the body of the deceased, and ask us to help them organize a local burial in Calais or on the coast.
Depending on religious practices such as Islam, each burial can cost several thousand euros, partly for the costs of the plot and the ceremony.
Since the end of the 1990s and until 2017, when this group was created, many people have been buried in Calais, sometimes without their memory enduring. Many graves are abandoned, their identity erased or absent. We also try to maintain these places of remembrance and contemplation.
Final beneficiaries of the collection
Donations are intended exclusively for the “groupe décès” in situations where it is called upon by the families for its support, when they are unable to finance all or part of the costs associated with the funeral, while respecting their religious choices and convictions.
Carriers of the project
The “groupe décès” is made up of people involved in various forms of solidarity on the Franco-British border. The local association Le Réveil Voyageur is helping us by hosting this fundraiser, whose funds are used exclusively to pay for funerals.
