The Lebanese Center for Human Rights (CLDH) was set up in Beirut in 2006 by SOLIDA (Support for Lebanese Detained Arbitrarily), a France-based NGO active since 1996 in the fight against arbitrary detention, torture and impunity.
Each year since 2006, CLDH team conducts dozens of visits to prisoners and detainees in the Lebanese prisons for documentation and legal assistance purpose, and our organization not only represents the only hope for some of them, but also constitutes an effective monitoring entity at the disposal of local/international organizations and embassies. To give you an example, CLDH provided in 2011 a lawyer for Issam Attieh Said, a Palestinian refugee in Lebanon who had been detained for 26 years, and could have been released 11 years ago, had he been assisted by a lawyer. The appointed lawyer proceeded to all the judiciary measures to be taken in the case that allowed the release of Mr Said in August 2011. The judiciary fees were paid thanks to some generous funding provided by two French NGOs, AEDH (Agir Ensemble pour les Droits de l’Homme) and ACAT - France (Action by Christians Against Torture). Without CLDH actions, some of the poorest prisoners and detainees would remain detained and deprived from any assistance.
Also, CLDH through its project Centre Nassim for the rehabilitation of victims of torture, assists every year at least 70 new victims of torture, including relatives of disappeared persons, and provides them with free medical, psychological, social and legal rehabilitation services. Their transportation to and from the rehabilitation center is paid by the center as well as their medical treatments and external consultations. We try to help them as much as possible and our activities really fill an existing gap in the taking in charge of some of the victims of torture, since each NGO has its own priorities and criteria and we are particularly careful not to overlap with the work of our fellow NGOs.
Beside the continuity of these assistance activities, we need your support for the implementation of our next years’ activities. This includes the development of Centre Nassim in order to include more Syrian refugees and migrant domestic workers to our rehabilitation services, the organization of the next Human Rights Film Festivaland also the research activities and publication of yearly reports on the human rights issues followed up by the organization, lobbying, awareness raising, capacity building and networking activities.
